Iconography
Saint Elias the Prophet possesses some of the most beautiful iconography in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This sacred art, which covers the entire interior of the church, inspires, teaches, and encourages the faithful in their quest toward spiritual perfection. It expresses holiness in its sacred content: the Savior, the Theotokos, the Apostles, the Angels, and the Martyrs of the Faith. It calls us to be a part of a world transfigured by God’s grace and love. It gives us glimpses of Heaven and who we can become in Christ.
The beautiful iconography adorning the interior spaces of Saint Elias the Prophet is the work of the distinguished Greek iconographers Maria Sigala and Nikos Spanopoulos. The husband-and-wife team began the project in 1998 and completed the final phase in 2016. The classic Byzantine-style icons were painted on canvas in the couple’s Athens studio, shipped to Santa Fe, glued to the on the church’s walls and ceilings, and finished with the application of gold leaf.
