Schedule of activities for the 2016 Santa Fe Greek Festival, that will be held at the
Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 West Marcy St, in downtown Santa Fe.
The Aegean Sounds
The Aegean Sounds, the Southwest’s premier Greek and Mediterranean band, began in March 2004, the brainchild of Art Martinez and Jimmy Kapuranis. Realizing the untapped well of musical talent in the Albuquerque Greek community, Martinez, a longtime local musician, approached Kapuranis, who had been studying the bouzouki for years. They recruited other members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and a band was formed!
The Palamakia Dancers
The Palamakia Dancers will perform traditional Greek dances such as the Kalamatiano and Pentozali. A senior dance group from St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Albuquerque, the group’s members are college students and young professionals ages 18 and up. They perform at the annual Albuquerque Greek Festival held in October, and in other events throughout the year, including our annual Santa Fe Greek Festival.
Dances from many different regions of Greece and authentic costumes made in Greece create an experience that transports their audience to their ancestral home. The men wear the traditional Evzonas costume that consist of a vest, sash and skirt called the fustanella. The women wear a traditional Roumeli costume consisting of a white dress, specially decorated white wool sleeveless vest, fully decorated apron and the typical white head kerchief with fringe.
